Memmingen Airport (AKA Flughafen Memmingen, Allgäu Airport or Munich West Airport) is a small airport located about 1.5 hours away from Munich.
And if you’re completely lost about how to get from Memmingen Airport to actual Munich (or vice versa), well – this post is for you.
As an airport serving budget airlines like WizzAir and RyanAir, FMM Airport has been my saving grace for cheap flights (like 10 euro flights to England and Bulgaria!), and is a genius travel hack for saving a LOT of money when travelling to/from Bavaria.
I have flown in and out of Memmingen Airport several times, enough to have lost a bit of my sanity, and also learn some very important tricks and must-knows.
At first glance, it might seem like Memmingen Airport is hard to get to/navigate, but that’s not the case if you know a few basic tips.
Save this post for later on Pinterest:
This guide will walk you through all the important must-knows for surviving FMM Airport, including how to get to Memmingen Airport from Munich, how to get back from Memmingen Airport to Munich, and of course plenty of tips on making the most of your time there.
Memmingen Airport: the Basics
Let’s start with some basic must-knows about FMM Airport to get you started.
Where is Memmingen Airport?
Located about 110 km away from Munich, Memmingen Airport is in the Swabia region of Bavaria, right by a town going by the same name.
If you get confused, it’s also often referred to as Allgäu Airport or Munich West Airport.
What you really need to know is that despite “Munich” sometimes being used in its name, it’s not close to Munich at all, and if you book a flight here with the intention of visiting Munich, be sure to tack on an additional 2-3 hours of commute time to arrive in Munich’s city center.
Opening Hours for the Terminal and Info Desk (according to their main website)
5 am – 11 pm
OR depending on the timetable: 2 hours before the first departure until 1 hour after the last arrival
NOTE: As I mentioned, Memmingen is also the name of the town that is super close to the airport. Be careful when looking up directions that you’re actually getting directions to Memmingen Allgäu Airport rather than just the town.
How to Get from Munich to Memmingen Airport
If you’ve booked a cheap flight leaving from Memmingen Airport, the good news is there are a lot of easy ways to reach it from Munich’s city center. Here are a few:
Allgäu Airport Express (Recommended)
This is always my go-to because it’s the simplest.
It costs 15 euros if you book online and then 20 euros in-person on the day of. If you’re purchasing on the day-of, credit/debit cards are accepted.
The overall journey from Munich to Memmingen Airport with the express bus is 1 ½ hours (provided that there isn’t any traffic). Book tickets here.
Buses have always been punctual for me, so I would say they’re quite reliable.
NOTE: In my experience, it’s always better to book in advance because not only is it cheaper, but you are guaranteed a seat on the bus. I’ve seen some people turn up on the day of, only to find the bus is mostly full and having to wait to the side as everyone else boarded to see if there was still space for them. It didn’t look fun!
Flixbus
If you want to take the bus from Munich to Memmingen Airport, Flixbus actually offers tickets that are cheaper than the Allgäu Airport Express if you book early enough.
The timetable is a little random though. Here are two ways to find out if there are cheap Flixbus options for you:
OPTION ONE: Use Omio
Omio is a free site that lets you compare & book transportation options, making it a great way to find the cheapest ways to travel around Europe no matter where you are going to/from.
If you enter “Memmingen (FMM)” as your destination and then click the bus options, have a scroll through and see if there are any Flixbuses that suit your departure time.
Make sure that the final destination is Memmingen AIRPORT and not Memmingen Central Bus Station.
OPTION TWO: Go on Flixbus Directly
If you go on the Flixbus website and search for buses to Memmingen, scroll through the different options and find departures for Memmingen AIRPORT.
Not all Memmingen buses go all the way to the airport, so this distinction is important.
NOTE: While Flixbus is potentially cheaper, I’ve never used them to get to the airport and based on my previous Flixbus experiences, I’d be worried about their punctuality. You can read my honest Flixbus review for more information.
Public Transit (Train + Bus)
Another way to get from Munich to Memmingen Airport is by using public transit.
The reason I don’t recommend this one as much as the Allgäu Airport Express is because you don’t actually save that much money.
Here is how you would get from Munich to Memmingen Airport by public transit:
- Take a train from Munich to Memmingen train station
- Take a bus from Memmingen train station to the airport
PS: If you are travelling with others, it might be worthwhile to get a Bayern ticket, which would cover the cost of your train and the bus ride to the airport.

And if you need to get from Memmingen Airport to Munich, I’ll run down the (pretty similar) options for you below.

Given that Memmingen mostly deals with budget airlines, odds are good that you’ll be delayed or that passport control will take longer than anticipated.
Don’t worry, if you happen to miss the bus you’ve got a ticket for, you can still use your ticket on the next departure, but know that buses WILL leave without you and will not wait, even when the whole plane is delayed.

If you are trying to get from anywhere else in Germany to Memmingen Airport, I recommend looking up the options on Omio and entering your final destination as Memmingen (FMM).
This is a free site that allows you to compare and book different transportation options, and you can even sort it by departure time or what’s cheapest/quickest.
Important Must-Knows for Surviving Memmingen Airport
Having been in and out of Memmingen Airport a fair few times, here are some tips for making sure you don’t go insane:
Sorry squatters, you can’t sleep overnight
For safety reasons, the airport doesn’t allow overnight sleepers.
The airports’ opening hours are said to be from 5am-11pm (with special exceptions based on the flight schedule) but generally speaking, you won’t be able to spend the night here.
Sure, there’s kind of WiFi…
Nothing frustrates me more than the WiFi at Memmingen Airport!
It’s super spotty and tends to just randomly start working, so don’t depend on it.
If you have important documents you need to load up (e.g. boarding pass, bus ticket, etc.) make sure you have them ready beforehand because you might not be able to connect to the Internet once you’re there.
Passport control will (probably) take a while
The passport control at Memmingen Airport always takes forever because there’s only 4 people max checking passports at any given time (usually only two) and the waiting area is really small, so it feels quite squishy and claustrophobic.
Trying to go to the bathroom is especially awkward, because the line is right next to the bathrooms, so if you try to go, it’ll look like you’re cutting ahead.
As an example of how long passport control takes, once I was on a small, pretty full plane from Fez, Morocco back to Munich and it was about one hour from exiting the plane to finishing passport control.
Security shuts down periodically
If you see that there’s nobody at security, don’t panic.
They periodically close it down, at which point a pretty much everyone congregates in the main entrance area, clamouring for tables and places to sit. On that note…
Food and drink wise, there are two Coffee Fellows
One outside before security (which also sells cafe foods like bagels and bagel sandwiches) and one inside that serves mostly drinks.
That’s pretty much it for food options.
You WILL be walking to your plane
What did you expect from a small airport?
You’ll definitely be walking outside to reach your plane, so bring warm clothes. It’s also important to mention that…
On your way back, you will likely be waiting in the cold
As I mentioned above, the waiting area for passport control is really small, which means if there’s a lot of people, you’ll be lining up outside too.
This was pretty miserable in the cold December air, especially because two planes landed at the same time, leaving double the folks queuing up to go inside.
I highly recommend bundling up and dressing for the outdoors on your way back in case you get stuck waiting.
I hope this Munich to Memmingen Airport guide was helpful!
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about FMM Airport, or need more tips to make your trip as smooth as possible 🙂
This is one of my favorite airports!
I love that it’s so small so you don’t have to walk around for ages.
A great way to get there is also with Flixbus – I already saved so much money that way 😀
