In the absence of time travel, I am over-the-moon grateful for places like Kotor.

Kotor, Montenegro – an unassuming little gem wedged between calm bay waters and photogenic mountains.

I mean, not to be overly dramatic here, but stepping through the gates of Kotor’s fortified Old Town is like an actual step back in time.

(If you ignore the souvenir shops and other tourists, that is).

Imagine beautiful squares linked by inviting narrow streets weaved into a picturesque maze, studded along the way with beautiful churches and museums (including yes, one devoted to cats). No doubt, it’s an alluring place packed with buckets of mysterious charm, best to be discovered over a few days break, just as I did in April.

See, when the cruise ships glide away, the streets become empty for your private browsing… and that’s when Kotor shines its brightest.

Between the sweeping views from San Giovanni Fortress, the romantic Venetian vibe and the city’s homey ‘lived in’ feel, you can say Kotor really won me over… and I hope with these photos, it’ll win you over too.

This post is part of my Travel Photography series, which showcases my favourite photos from past trips. If you’re looking for more in-depth advice, hop over to the Travel Guides section of my blog!

  1. I absolutely loved Kotor – I want at the end of February over a year ago. I annoyed my friends by playing the GoT theme on repeat as we went up to the fortress. I was also impressed by the amount of cats!
